jk not that story, but let’s see. idk if people know (or i honestly don’t remember if i’ve written it somewhere, probably) but each postcard within a yearly series has a prompt.
the rundown is as follows:

• first in series: awesome friend who makes music!

• second in series: movie

• third in series: tv show

• fourth in series: sincerely mego wego

we’re currently at the third in the series and it’s up to a tv show. i honestly sat around thinking of what anime to do. i initially wanted to do dandadan but… my favorite scenes/arc hasn’t happened yet, so will pocket that for later. i really wanted to do guilty crown’s “departure” or “krone”, but i’d need to rewatch it since it’s been probably 10+ years since i’ve seen it. i also really wanted to do a song from girl band cry but……. i don’t think i’m emotionally ready to represent that series just yet haha

so it was actually really nice when ye olde buddy, sidharta, came to crash at our place for a week and mentioned how they haven’t seen any of adventure time distant lands. so poifect! it’s kind of really fitting to do “monster”!

and and before getting too in the weeds, this song actually has a funny (??) connotation because back in 2021 i made a cover of the song and dedicated it to someone and that someone is squid LOL so…. for all the loverboys out there, to win the gal perhaps you just got to dedicate a love song to them ;)

“monster” - half shy & olivia olson

okay i don’t think i want to spoil too much because it’s definitely an episode people should watch if they’re somewhere in the middle of finishing adventure time and not quite there yet with “distant lands". let this be a bit of a push for folx to finish and get the extended content that’s wow, big wow.

for the artwork, i wanted to do something about the red light (not a spoiler w/o context!!! heheheheh). the realization of the red light was so painfully emotional. the writers paced the episode so well in framing the events leading up to that scene and the ones that followed. it’s a distinct type of emotion that doesn’t really leave you. therefore, i knew i wanted it to be art featuring that red light.

for the perspective, i was moving the camera around in my head trying to think of what’s the best angle to tell the story for the artwork. and honestly, the animators already landed it perfectly. here’s my lil collection of reference grabs:

so as you can see, the original and the postcard club art have one key difference, which is the addition of bonnibel bonnie bon bon. i think there’s a part of me, especially after digesting the lyrics of the song, that marcy would go back with bon bon. to a place of huge trust and vulnerability.

okay i don’t want to spoil a lot so just go watch adventure time: distant lands, “obsidian”! but you have to watch all of adventure time first otherwise… things don’t make sense haha (cry).

i think i honestly really cooked on this one. so be proud with me uwu

everyone, it is my absolute apology for being a month late!!!!!!!!! my whole family was moving, including me, and wow it’s been such a rush. we’re settled now though, so huzzah! i totally did not finish the art at midnight and i totally did not finish writing this at 2am…

so what are we cooking?

okay by now everyone knows of this movie and it’s bopping soundtrack and awesome animation style and yadda yadda. but let’s go - it’s storytime!

back in 2018, i went out to palm springs to work on a short film with a bunch of cool people and friends. if anyone knows me, i have real crappy ass memory, but i remember this set because of the quirky story - which believe me was really refreshing!

the short was called “wrinkles… and other unfortunate defects” and it began (if i’m remembering correctly) a running relationship with lindsay sunada (an amazing director!!!!), where we collaborated on a couple of projects (let me go, close to you) when i had my silly lil production company - ukkei entertainment.

lindsay was nice enough to give me the go ahead to share the film with all of you!

in fact i have some behind the scene photos from the archive lol here’s a peek of em:

okay i brought this up because both the writers of this quirky short film were danya jimenez and hannah mcmechan who….. also wrote kpop demon hunters (kpdh)!!!!!!! wow!!!!!!!! amazing!!!!!!!!!! they’re an amazing dynamic duo!!!! i just had to do a postcard club dedicated to them!!!!!!!!! can’t believe i was able to collab/create with such cool people in the past!!!!!!!! meanwhile, i’m such a pleb… sob…

“what it sounds like” - huntr/x, ejae, audrey nuna & rei ami

okay this song ruined me. i think i got way too attached to rumi and wow love polytrix <3 but in all seriousness, this past month has been such an internal fight of finding the best way of illustrating what i wanted to convey despite lacking the skills to do so.

the concept for this month’s art was to capture that moment after “what it sounds like.” after the huzzah of fighting megamind, after the rush of coming on top as huntr/x again, after all that and now it’s just downtime… when mira and zoe are faced with knowing they ditched rumi but not knowing that rumi literally tried to kill herself. like that’s real and that’s rough and wow i read too many sad fanfics detailing the emotions which in turn made the postcard club art SO SAD and overwhelming that i couldn’t do it lol. here’s a little draft of it.

like what the hell was i doing, who do i think i am.. pain… so uhm… i strayed away from that concept and sketched a bit more and came out with what’s shown previously. i don’t feel like it’s perfect and i do like my painful version still, but y’know i’m trying haha.

i wanted at least some of the pain sadness ouchie to come through so i put a little “darkness” vibes mooching off rumi still… if i was a better artist, it’d definitely be hands pulling rumi down but i’m not there yet!! yet!!

i hope you enjoy! more of the reasoning for the song choice is on the postcard so... you’ll just have to wait to read that! :)

anywho, i bothered danya for a bit of info on kpdh for this silly little substack post, so without further ado, here we go!

i originally asked about favorite songs thinking i’d use them for the postcard club… but… that didn’t happen. still, it was fun to learn which tracks stood out to them. Free was a favorite for both danya and hannah, and hannah also really loves Your Idol (which, if i do say so myself, is a very good bop).

i also asked about their involvement with the songs, and it was really fun to hear how that process worked. during development, they would write temporary lyrics directly into the script to help communicate the intention and emotional direction of each song. those ideas would then get shaped collaboratively before being passed along to the songwriters and musicians as a creative guideline for the final tracks in the film.

and finally, i asked about inspiration. a lot of the dynamic behind huntr/x was influenced by danya and hannah’s own friendship—being roommates, besties, coworkers, the whole shebang. they were also watching a lot of k-dramas while writing the movie, along with listening to plenty of k-pop. BTS, GOT7, and Stray Kids were all part of that mix.

i used inky stamps this time for people who requested the postcard(s) be sent protected… so that was kind of fun…

yo yo! i know, we’re really getting “professional” here with a whole substack thingeroo, but y’know, i’m stepping up my game here!! from now on, i’ll be making two posts per postcard season.

bear with me as i yap and pretend i’m a writer of sorts.

i will have you know that i planned out the months for the upcoming 2025-2026 rotation and the mego postcards will be sent out october, january, april and july. so y’all can keep that in mind :) and i won’t do any silly mess-ups like this past year…

so what are we cooking?

for those that recall, the first mego postcard ever was for glasse & slyleaf’s “two spirits” track. glasse/evelyn is one of my besties so it was very funny that this whole club came from the idea of making fanart of evelyn and sharing it with all 100+ of y’all… but i mean, here we are now…

anywho, evelyn just released their second EP this year titled “home” and you knOW I JUST HAD TO DO ANOTHER FANART OF THE BESTIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so that’s how we’re here.

but now the song choice… i will be honest and say that “cathedral wash” takes up a large portion in my heartspace and it’s one of my favorite tracks of evelyn’s hands down. and the way that evelyn did the vocal mix of “two spirits” on top of “cathedral wash” - oh brother!!!! but alas i had to go with another track because the visuals and sentiment just went way too hard.

“trying to fall forever” - xia & glasse

i had to ask evelyn the meaning behind the title to verify if the design matched the intent and they told me “i thought the title just slapped” … could you imagine my reaction… (but of course they said more)

so the art is literally a take on “trying to fall forever” with a character based off of evelyn falling down the center through an infinite space. i have an original art tattoo from a sick-ass artist where a person is falling supported by several hands, reaching while withdrawn, and completed with a single tear falling upwards. this art piece definitely inspired the emotion behind the evelyn caricature especially with the action of slightly reaching upwards. by definition of falling, there is an expectation that there’s a high and low, a beginning and an end. so by reaching, perhaps the character is reminiscing of a before, something that is unseen in the present.

and of course, since the music video is so precious, the character is falling through the evelyn multiverse. falling through the cow paddy hills in briones regional park, through the cavernous terrain of cathedral wash, through duncan’s landing in the sonoma coastline, through the scorching dunes in white sands national park, and through the hork habitat in california. falling through locations, through portals, through windows that synchronize as flashes of places that carry weight from existing there at those specific moments in time.

during this, i kept reasoning with myself why someone would want to “fall forever” because “falling” has a negative connotation and i really didn’t want this to be negative and i don’t think evelyn or xia made it that way either. so to want to fall forever, i understand it as a desire to be in a constant, a state that has no start or finality. to be swept into a place of comfort that is certain if caught in the flux. and to try, to try to fall forever is wishful, hopeful, an aim, a goal. so i know i’m yapping nonsense, but maybe it’s about not looking at an ends to a mean, but about that path through and allowing that path to be comfortable. who knows, i’m just a yapper sculpting my own interpretation of the song lol
